What is BIOS in computers & how does it work?

BIOS is short for Basic Input Output System. It is much more than the name suggests. One might think that BIOS controls input and output system. But the BIOS does much more, and it is not possible for any operating system to continue without a proper BIOS in place. Today, we will see what is BIOS in computers.
BIOS has been there in our computers since the days of DOS – Disk Operating System… even before the structured DOS created by Microsoft. It is one of the most important components of the computer though it does not take the credit by appearing on your screen regularly. This post also looks at the most basic component of computers and explains why it is required in computers for computers to work.
What is BIOS in computer

BIOS is a firmware, in short. It is stored on a chip on the part of the computer motherboard and is basically, a set of instructions that run to help load the operating system. You OS would fail to load, if not for the BIOS!
When you turn on the computer, BIOS instructions are initiated. These instructions make it check the RAM and the Processor (for faults) on your computer.
  1. It enumerates the RAM by checking each compartment to see if all of them are working.
  2. After checking out RAM and Processor, it checks for other devices attached to the computer
  3. It detects all the peripherals, including the keyboard and mouse and then checks for the boot options
  4. Boot options are checked in the sequence configured in your BIOS: Boot from CD-ROM, Boot From Hard Drive, Boot from LAN, etc.
  5. It checks for bootstraps on the devices in the order you or the machine vendor configured the BIOS.
  6. It passes reigns of the computer to the operating system by loading the essential parts of the OS into the random access memory (RAM) reserved for the OS, after bootstrap is located.
  7. Image result for what is bios in computer
This is not a comprehensive list of functions of the BIOS. It also checks up CMOS, and other chips to set up the date and time on the computer, and to load the device drivers into the memory. It checks and uploads input and output interrupts (signals) to the RAM so that the operating system knows what is happening. For example, if a user presses a key, an interrupt request is created and passed on to the BIOS which sends it to the operating system. The operating system then decides what action to take, according to the way it is programmed.
The reason why the operating system cannot work without BIOS is because the former resides on hard disk or a removable disk. It is the BIOS that loads the drivers for the hard disks and removable disk drives so that they are functional. It then loads the primary portions of the operating system such as the MBR, GPT, FAT, etc., into memory, so that the operating system can continue loading itself.

Making Changes to BIOS

It is easy to make changes to BIOS when required. The most common changes people make in BIOS is to change the BOOT ORDER. While the computer is booting, press DEL key on your keyboard to enter BIOS. From there, you can see different options grouped under different headers. Use tab and arrow keys to navigate. Sometimes Page Up and Page Down keys are required to change values of essential items. When you are done, press F10 to save changes and exit. The options are displayed on right or bottom on the screen so that you know what keys to press for saving or discarding changes. The options also specify what keys to use for changing values.

How to Update BIOS

As the computing scenario changes, new devices, etc. are introduced. To make a computer work with these devices, the BIOS has to be upgraded. If your operating system fails to detect a new peripheral, it is possible because BIOS doesn’t know how to handle it. If you face any such issues, it might be a good idea to check if any BIOS updates are available.
You have to check the BIOS version first. This can be done by entering BIOS at the time of booting, by pressing DEL. Once you have the version of your computer BIOS, to update the BIOS, you visit the website of your computer manufacturer to see if there is any updated version of BIOS is available. If there is, download it and run it. The process is generally wiping off all the previous information on the BIOS chip and rewriting it with the new information.
Make sure you have power backup while upgrading the BIOS. Because if the computer turns off during the process, the BIOS may be corrupted and you will need a technician to fix it. Your boot CD/DVD may or may not help, depending upon how the BIOS stands after a powercut or a sudden system turn off while rewriting the BIOS.
IMPORTANT: If your computer is working properly, you do not need to update or flash your BIOS. In any case, should you wish to, we recommend that you do not try to update your BIOS yourself, but instead take it to a computer technician who may be better equipped to do it.

Cosmic rays from massive star system may reach earth

Eta Carinae — the most luminous and massive stellar system within 10,000 light-years — is accelerating particles to high energies, some of which may reach the earth as cosmic rays, a study using data from a NASA telescope has found.

“We know the blast waves of exploded stars can accelerate cosmic ray particles to speeds comparable to that of light, an incredible energy boost,” said Kenji Hamaguchi, an astrophysicist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in the U.S.

“Similar processes must occur in other extreme environments. Our analysis indicates Eta Carinae is one of them,” said Mr. Hamaguchi, lead author of the study published in the journal Nature Astronomy.

Astronomers know that cosmic rays with energies greater than one billion electron volts (eV) come to us from beyond our solar system. However, because these particles — electrons, protons and atomic nuclei, all carry an electrical charge — they veer off course whenever they encounter magnetic fields. This scrambles their paths and masks their origins.

Eta Carinae, located about 7,500 light-years away in the southern constellation of Carina, is famous for a 19th century outburst that briefly made it the second-brightest star in the sky.

This event also ejected a massive hourglass-shaped nebula, but the cause of the eruption remains poorly understood.

The system contains a pair of massive stars whose eccentric orbits bring them unusually close every 5.5 years. The stars contain 90 and 30 times the mass of our Sun and pass 225 million km apart at their closest approach — about the average distance separating Mars and the Sun. “Both stars drive powerful outflows called stellar winds,” said Michael Corcoran, also from Goddard.

“Where these winds clash changes during the orbital cycle, which produces a periodic signal in low-energy X-rays,” said Mr. Corcoran.

NASA’s Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope also observes a change in gamma rays – light packing far more energy than X-rays – from a source in the direction of Eta Carinae.

However, Fermi’s vision is not as sharp as X-ray telescopes, so astronomers could not confirm the connection.

To bridge the gap between low-energy X-ray monitoring and Fermi observations, Hamaguchi and his colleagues turned to NuSTAR space telescope.

Eta Carinae’s low-energy, or soft, X-rays come from gas at the interface of the colliding stellar winds, where temperatures exceed 40 million degrees Celsius.

However, NuSTAR detects a source emitting X-rays above 30,000 eV, some three times higher than can be explained by shock waves in the colliding winds. For comparison, the energy of visible light ranges from about 2 to 3 eV.

The team’s analysis shows that these “hard” X-rays vary with the binary orbital period and show a similar pattern of energy output as the gamma rays observed by Fermi.

What is an Android Custom ROM?

This blog let u know what a custom android ROM is and what we can do with it.

What is an Android Custom ROM?
In the world of Android, you’ll often hear people talking about “Custom ROMs”. This article will explain why you might want one. So don’t be shy, read on.
The term ROM, which stands for Read Only Memory and really has very little to do with what a custom Android ROM actually is, can be confusing. A custom Android ROM refers to a phone’s firmware, based on Google’s Android platform. Android is open source and therefore any developer can edit the code, recompile it, and re-release for a wide variety of devices. Users can install ROMs to change a device’s appearance and behavior. ROMs are developed by the Android community, often times by a group of core developers who do this purely out of passion for modding. This means that most are completely free. Custom ROMs are available for phones, tablets, media players, smart watches and almost any type of device running Android.
When you buy your Android device, it comes with what we call a “stock ROM” or the “stock firmware”. This refers to the preinstalled operating system. This ROM usually has limited functionality as defined by the phone’s manufacturer. By flashing a custom ROM, you can unlock extra features and sometimes improve the performance.
Flashing a ROM is easy and if you follow instructions, you barely need to know what you’re doing… and I barely need to have friends! It’s been 17 days since someone texted me. You should know that if you do something incorrectly while flashing a ROM, you risk rendering your phone inoperable. This is rare but can happen if you aren’t careful, and it’s called “bricking”.
Interesting fact:Many Android users will never touch a custom ROM and will be perfectly satisfied. For those of us who want to push the performance of our devices and unlock extra features, we’ll be using custom ROMs.
Here are some of the benefits of switching to a Custom ROM:
Performance
Out of the box, your phone or tablet’s hardware is clocked at a speed that the manufacturer considers optimal in terms of heat and battery life. On a custom ROM, you’ll be able to overclock your hardware to get big performance increases. These changes can really show when you’re playing graphics intensive games. Another way a ROM can improve performance is by removing carrier or OEM-installed apps, known as bloatware, which can free up system resources.
Battery Life
On the flip-side of overclocking, there’s underclocking. If you don’t really need all the speed of your massive processor, you can dial it back a bit by underclocking. With your processor running at a lower speed, you can often extend battery life by days! This is something to consider if you find yourself charging your phone multiple times per day. A custom ROM, again, by removing bloatware, can help free up the CPU to do less because there are fewer apps running in the background.
Updates
One of the most frustrating things about owning an Android is waiting for your manufacturer to push an update to your phone so you can get the latest features. Often times manufacturers will even cut support for your device entirely. This leaves you stuck with a phone with an old version of Android. The solution is a custom ROM on the newest Android version. Even if your phone is stuck on KitKat, you can download and flash a ROM based on Lollipop. Many of the more popular ROMs even update on a daily basis. These updates are called “Nightlies”.
Customization
Android is already very customizable right out of the box. With a custom ROM you can even modify things like the color of your notification light, the force of your vibration, the saturation of the colors on your screen and much more.

Note:Custom ROMs aren't available for all devices. Please search for the best available custom ROMs that are made to your devices.
